Experimentation One

Low Key Lighting

Examples and Analysis

Truth, fantasy or fiction is about the absence or presentation of fiction or fact. This is the same way in which a camera needs light to properly take a picture. Without light the image becomes distorted and mysterious due to the fact that you can no longer see all of the image. This can be related to the way truth is hidden in lies the same way darkness can be hide parts of an image.

Therefore I will be practacing low key lighting in my next photoshoot therefore it will be classed as a experiment.

In this image, you can see the contrast thought the light and the dark colours has again made the image look effective and give it a more creepy and surrealistic feeling.

Although this image has not been done with specific lighting, and the effect on the arms of the model are natural props, no doubt probably sticks from a tree or a bush.

These props add a type of double exposure effect although the image is not actually double exposure.

In this next photoshoot I will be experimenting with lighting in photos the same way seeing things in a brighter light can bring the truth out, and making something darker can potentionally hide the truth.

As you can see from the image to the right you can see that almost all of the models face is completely covered up and 'blacked out' This has obviously been done with studio lighting and illuminating selective parts of the face. This adds a great deal of contrast throughout the image moving from the pure black to the lighter colours

This photo is another one done with selective and studio lighting. This allows once again for a specific part of the image to be lit but the rest of it be completely black out / shadowed. This consistant contrast links to the theme of this unit, but also helps give a more effective and interesting image which has been created.

In my images I will also try to achieve a specific look through editing lighting and giving the images more and less contrast.

My Photography - Creation Process

To the left are screenshots which show the processes in which I worked in to produce my final images. These do not emulate the style above but to run along side it somewhat due to the fact I have used the same processes and the same effects that the originals have used.

  1. To start with I began by setting up my studio and arranging the lights in the appropriate places, I then started to take pictures of different people in different poses with the lights set in different positions.

  2. Once all the pictrues had been taken I moved them from my SD card onto my laptop and sorted though each image looking for good qualities and back qualities in each image.
The images which had the most good qualities were put into a different folder on my laptop called refinements, I did this so it would be easier to pick which photos I wanted to edit into final pieces.

  3. The images were then chosen and put into photoshop to be edited.

  4. Adding effects layers and blending modes I lightened some parts of the image and darkened some other parts adding contrast where I thought it needed to be.

  5. Finally I finished up changing the exposure levels and the different effect I'd added onto the image before saving them as a JPG image onto my laptop and uploading them to this website.
