Jerry Uelsmann

“There are no uninteresting things. There are just uninterested people.”

Examples and Analysis

Jerry Uelsmann who was born in Detroit on the 11 of June in 1934. One of his main archievements was receiving his B.F.A. degree at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957.  His first job was teaching photography at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1960. He became a graduate research professor of art at the university in 1974, and is now retired from teaching. Uelsmann received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1967 and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1972. Uelsmann’s work has been exhibited in more than 100 individual shows in the United States and abroad over the past thirty years.

As you can see from the image to the left Uelsmann like to create some extremely abstract imagery. These images consist of specific elements which compliment each other and make the final image look extremely effective. The central focus of this image is the rock, this is obvious due to the rock has been position in the center of the image. As for the colour palette in this image it is strickly monochromatic, and the light is mainly situated in the background.  Another thing which is varied in this image is the tonal range, the wide spectrum helps aid the image in looking more effective.

The image to the left is another piece created by Uslemann but this is more of a finalized double exposure image. The two images merge and blend into each other through the use of the sky in the boat picture. As for lighting there has been specific lighting used with the original  hand image, for example this was probably taken in a studio with direct lighting, whilst the boat picture has been done in a more natural setting with the contrast and brightness increased when in Photoshop.

As for this Image to the left you can see that it is obviously Photoshopped. This has been done by combining two seperatly taken images and overlaying them and using blending mods in photoshop to make it look effective.  The hand image looks like it'd been done in a studio shoot, but the tree has been done in a outdoor nature shoot.  The visual effects both of these different things contain help contrast and compliment the final image.

Another of Uelsmann's images shows his skills of Photoshop once more in how he's merged a large tree stump and a entire house together to create a final image.  Some things which are extremely prominant in this image is the use of landscapes and the differences between the foreground and background.

Once again another thing uselmann has done is use high amounts of contrast in his images. This makes the vibrance between white and black shades more prominant and effective.
