Miniature Photography

Miniature photography is also sometimes known as miniature faking, although it can also be called the  diorama effect or diorama illusion. This is a process in which a photograph of a life-size location or object is made to look like a photograph of a miniature scale model.

This miniature effect has also been shown on the image to the left. This has been done by the photographer travelling to a high up structure with a landscape setting below, in this case it seems to be a coast line with buildings, houses, and forests.

The photographer would have then done one of two things, they'd have changed the setting on their camera to get the desired diorama effect or taken a normal image and edited the photograph later in Photoshop.

The amount of contrast and colour saturation in most of the miniature photographs you can see if incredible. The size in which most elemts of the photograph seem to be help to contrast other parts of the image, in this case it's the orange hued buildings with the ocean.

In this image to the left you can also see that the miniature has been created the same way as what I specified before. This has been taken during what seems to be a grand prix race, where by the photographer is sitting high in the stands. From this the same effects have been used either on the camera or in Photoshop and they've been able to take an effective picture which looks as though everything is miniature.

Creation Process

Since this is an experiment I decided to stick with the same processes used on the original images but with my own style techiques. I decided that I would change the setting on my camera in order to gvie me the desired miniature effect and not choose the taking of the normal photo and editing later in Photoshop.

  1. To start with I began by finding the perfect setting, and this would we onto of grinshill, looking out over the fields and farms. Many locations were planned as ideas for this shoot but Grinshill won over the possible bridges which I could have chosen.

  2. I did these by simply changing the camera setting and then starting to take the pictures. Once all the pictures were taken I moved them from my SD card and onto my laptop before sorting them into proper groups in which good quality photos were left alone and bad quality photos were removed. This stage simply made it much easier to find the good photos when it came to the editing process.

  3. I then moved the photos in photoshop and started to change the layer effective. Doing this gave me the ability to have more contrast in the images and increase the blurred lines around the top of bottom of the image, this in turn made my original photos look even more miniature.

  4. Once the editing was complete I simply saved the files and uploaded them to this website.
