Joel Robinson

For my artist research I decided to pick Joel Robison.

Joel Robison is a 31 year old Canadian photographer who is currently living in the UK. He has been creating and sharing his conceptual portraiture work for the last 7 years. His intention of his work is to try and tell a story.

Over the last 3 years he has worked with over 200 students in 7 countries in a series of photography workshops aimed at building both the creative portfolio and setting up a photography business.

Robinsons  work has been used world wide by clients such as Coca-Cola, Yahoo, even Fifa.

As you can see from the picture to the left Robinson has specifically made himself look smaller than normal and photoshopped himself onto objects. This effect makes him look like a miniature man standing ontop of the jar.

These effects can only be made in photoshop. This is done by taking pictures of the different photo elements, for eample the person, then another of the jar, then another of the background.

These photos would then be loaded into photoshop and be arranged so that they looked like it was one photo consisting of all the previously taken photos but to create one final image.

This process is a difficult one and can leave some attempt look bland and not impressive, it is known to take a large amount of photoshop skill to actually create these images.

Creation Process

To create these photos I firstly started by going out into my garden and started taking pictures of my cat and some books.

  1. Above was the first stage of taking these photo, although once this process was done I started to move all the photos from the SD card to my laptop.

  2. The photos I'd taken at each shoot were then seperated into different folders dependsing on whether they were of good quality or if they were of bad quality. The good quality photos would later be used in my final images for my triptography experiment, I did this so they were easily accessable and also easy to find once in Photoshop. It gave me the ability to not go searching through literally thousands of photos to find the good quality ones.

  3. The selected photos were then dragged into Photoshop to start the editing process. I started by cropping the images of my cat out and then placing it on the selected books.

  4. This was done and the cat was cropped down to be the proper size. Once this had been done I started to add the drop layers and add some shadows udner the cat to make it look more realistic.

Improvements and Final Pieces.
